e-Australia - where are we e-going?

In recent months, the Australian Press has carried numerous articles discussing the emergence of e-commerce and e-business in Australia. Is e-commerce a viable option in Australia? Or is our culture different from the North American culture of catalogue shopping - meaning acceptance of the new technology will take longer than we have expected. Or is the failure of Australians to shop on the web simply a reflection of the fact that there is nothing worthwhile to buy.

In the light of these questions, it is interesting to view the issue from another, non-Australian, non-American perspective. The Butler Group, Europe's leading commentator on the IT Industry has just released its latest publication - a 398 page analysis of the current status and future direction of e-commerce and e-business around the world generally. The report provides an in-depth analysis of where the market is today, which organisations are succeeding, which are failing, why some succeed and some fail, and what the future holds.

It is not easy to sum up 398 pages in a couple of paragraphs, but the message is clear. It is not just North American that is plunging headlong into commercial use of the Internet. Europe is following hot on its heels. If Australia doesn't move quickly, we'll be e-left e-behind.
